Wireless Internet Service
Wireless coverage is available in the James Watt Centre and parts of the Hugh Nisbet building and uses the SSID eccnet. The system is based on the popular WiFi or 802.11b standard, enabling the vast majority of laptop or notebook computers to connect easily and use the service.
System Requirements:
To use the ECCNet wireless service you will need a laptop or handheld with WiFi 802.11b or 802.11g wireless capability. This is usually achieved in one of three ways:
-
Laptop or handheld with wireless adapter
- Adding a wireless card to a free expansion (e.g. PCMCIA) slot
- Using a USB wireless adapter
Please note: PCs with 802.11a-only wireless cards will not be able to connect to the ECCNet wireless service.
Configuration of Windows XP, Vista and OS X is covered further in the
Guest Bedroom Internet Service
ECCNet provides 'always on' Internet access through ethernet network points provided in each guest room.
System Requirements:
To use the data service provided by ECCNet, you will need a PC running Windows 2000, XP or Vista or a Mac running OS X. The PC or Mac must be able to connect to an ethernet network. This is usually achieved in one of three ways:
- Through a built-in 10/100 ethernet port (also known as a LAN or network port)
- Adding a 10/100 ethernet LAN card to a free PCMCIA slot
- Using a USB ethernet adapter
Finally you will need an ethernet (also known as RJ-45) cable. Note: this is different to the cable for a dial-up modem. To get connected attach the cable to your PC's ethernet port and the other end to the outlet in your room labelled with a small computer symbol. Configuration of Windows XP, Vista and OS X is covered further in the

Telephone Service
Each bedroom is provided with a telephone handset with a 4-digit extension number. Incoming calls can be received direct from other rooms on-campus or through the University main switchboard. Outgoing calls are available through a Freewire pre-paid calling card.
Receiving Calls:
You should find your 4-digit extension number written on the phone handset in most rooms and all rooms have a label on the wall outlet displaying this number.
Anyone calling your room from another phone on campus (eg room to room) can simply dial your extension number free of charge.
Friends or family wishing to call you from off-campus locations should dial 0844 546 followed by your 4-digit extension number. For example, if your extension is 1234 off-campus callers would dial 0844 546 1234.
Making On-campus Calls:
Calling anyone on campus, whether a friend in another Residence or an academic department, is free of charge. Simply lift the handset and dial their 4-digit extension number.
Making calls to off-campus destinations (external calls):
To make calls to off-campus destinations ECCNet offers a Freewire telephone calling card. £5 Freewire calling cards are available from the Students Association Shop in the Hugh Nisbet Building or from Main Reception. Instructions are printed on the back of the card. Each card is sold in a sealed, clear plastic wrapper. Remove the card from the wrapper and scratch away the grey strip on the reverse of the card to reveal your 4-digit PIN. To make a call from any HW-ResNet phone, dial 1444 and wait for a prompt to enter your Freewire calling card number followed by the 4-digit PIN. You will then be asked to enter the full destination number you wish to call including the area code - even for Edinburgh (0131) calls.
