The Centre bucks the recession trend

PRESS RELEASE

Edinburgh Conference Centre Bucks Recession Trend

The current poor economic climate is showing no sign of affecting the Edinburgh Conference Centre at Heriot Watt University as it celebrates two major conference wins in as many months.

The British Association of Cancer Research (BACR) has signed up to host its two-day anniversary conference at the University conference facility in June 2010.  The BACR conference aims to encourage and develop the scientific information held on cancer research and promote national and international collaboration.    Welcoming over 300 delegates, mostly scientists and cancer medics, the conference will celebrate fifty years of BACR and its ongoing support to members and cancer research.

The BACR is the largest British-based cancer society, with a membership of almost 1,200.  Its aim is to promote the advance of research in relation to all aspects of cancer, both laboratory and clinical, and to encourage the exchange of information. It achieves this goal by providing educational and training opportunities for all those involved in the cancer field, particularly the next generation of cancer research professionals.

The second big win was secured when the Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS) selected the centre to host its 70th anniversary conference in August 2009.  The two-day conference will host over 400 CAS employees in the purpose built James Watt Centre for the main plenary sessions, which will be accompanied by an exhibition and workshops.

This is the fifth year that CAS has chosen to host its annual conference at the academic venue. The 2009 conference will focus on the effects of the current economic climate and the changes that CAS has made to deal with it.  Economic and social recovery is a hot topic and delegates will debate the “road to recovery” plans, highlighting the effects that the changes will have on CAS.

Citizens Advice Scotland is a voluntary sector organisation that helps provide consumer advice to anybody who needs it. CAS fulfils the same role as the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) and helps CAB with particularly complex cases by providing them with expert back-up services.

Accredited with a silver Green Business Tourism award, the Edinburgh Conference Centre boasts versatile conference and exhibition space for up to 600 delegates and a range of specialist in-house support services including AV, coordination and interpretation. Of the recent wins Lynne Geary, Sales and Marketing Manager said:

The Edinburgh Conference Centre has been the destination of choice for many esteemed organisations’ conferences and events and we hope to continue in this trend. It seems that during difficult economic times, organisers are choosing locations with excellent transport links, flexibility in the venue’s offerings and cost-effective pricing structures.”

“In these tough economic times, many organisations are looking for a venue which can offer state-of-the-art facilities and exceptional service while offering excellent value for money- something that the Edinburgh Conference Centre has great experience in”.

Both of these prestigious clients will benefit from the recently-upgraded audio visual facilities, providing a modern and interactive approach to conferencing.  The Edinburgh Conference Centre not only provides a multi-purpose conference facility but also has four lecture theatres, a variety of meeting rooms and function suites and on-site guest accommodation.
